DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
After years of waiting and $10 million, high school football players for Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School are now on their own turf at Dalzell Field in Dubuque.
The field is home to both schools' athletics.
Renovations began on the field back in April of 2012. The renovations allowed Dalzell Field to become more handicap-accessible.
The renovation also allowed an upgraded track and field for the athletes. New bleachers were also installed during the renovation.
Lucas LeGrand, a captain for the Dubuque Senior High School varsity football team, said the team is grateful for the new artificial turf on the football field.
"It just wasn't as nice as this one," he said. "You could fall (on the old field)."
Brook Anderson, another captain for the team, said he can't wait for the team's first home football game in the coming weeks. He said he expects the bleachers to be full of people.
"You can fit a lot of people in the stands," he said. "It should be pretty packed our first game. It's going to be pretty fun."
The Dubuque Senior High School varsity football team says they have been using the field almost every day over the summer for their practices.
Head coach Dale Ploessl says when the football players are not on the field, another athletic group is usually using the field.
"The football team uses it pretty much every day during the summer," he said. "Some other local teams have been using it as well. Our cross country team, cheerleading, band -- I mean, you name it, everyone is using it."
The $10 million renovation for Dalzell Field was funded by the 1-cent sales tax fund.
