ATKINS (KWWL) -

A 13-year-old boy has died after being taken to a hospital Wednesday following a water rescue at an Atkins pond, Benton County Sheriff Randy Forsyth confirmed.

Brandon Vogt, 13, of rural Atkins, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Thursday morning, according to the sheriff's office, which released the name Thursday evening.

Emergency crews were called to a man-made pond at the east edge of Atkins, near 33rd Avenue and 71st Street, around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a missing boy in the water.

According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Brandon and three other individuals were playing in and near the pond in a small boat approximately 50-60 feet from shore when Brandon jumped in the water and disappeared.

Deputies say the other children in the boat jumped in to help but were unable to locate him.

Officials found him in the water, and an ambulance took the child to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids before he was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
