BUCHANAN COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office has charged a homeowner with multiple counts of animal cruelty after removing numerous animals from his rural Buchanan County property on Aug. 13.

James Henry Hansen, 74, of rural Independence, was arrested Sunday and charged with four counts of cruelty to animals, one count of failure to dispose of dead bodies and one count of animal neglect following an investigation at his property located at 2382 Quasqueton Diagonal Blvd., southeast of Independence.

The animal cruelty and disposing charges are simple misdemeanors, while the animal neglect is a serious misdemeanor, according to officials.

Accompanied by local veterinarians, deputies took "numerous horses, calves and rabbits" from the property. They also gathered information and surveyed the animals' conditions.

Our KWWL crew went to Hansen's home in Independence. He wasn't there, but a number of people came out on the lawn and asked reporters to leave.

The people on the lawn said they plan to go to court.

Twenty-three rabbits, nine calves, and 15 horses were taken from the property, but neighbor Roger Derr said he never saw anything out of the ordinary.

"I just drive by there and see the horses there and their feeders out there. So I just assume that's his job to feed them. I see him go by in his pick-up with bags of stuff. I assume it's feed," said Derr.
