DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
The US Army Corps of Engineers' motor vessel "Mississippi" docked in Dubuque Tuesday for a public input session.
People strolling through the Port of Dubuque that afternoon likely saw the large ship.
This is part of the presidentially-appointed Mississippi River Commission's twice-annual tour of America's major rivers.
A public input session allowed for people to voice their concerns to the commission and give their opinions on issues facing the upper Mississippi River.
"Probably the biggest issue facing the upper Midwest is fixing all the locks and dams," Mississippi River Commission spokesperson Bob Anderson said. "They were built back in the 1930s, so they were only built to have a 50-year life span, so they're already 80 years old."
The commission will take the input from this trip and present findings and concerns to congressmen and congresswomen from the states bordering the Mississippi River.
Also scheduled aboard the MV Mississippi Tuesday afternoon, mayors from Dubuque, Guttenberg and Clinton signed a memorandum of common purpose between the Mississippi River Commission and the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative. It formalized a shared commitment to preserve and advance the natural beauty and economic viability of the Mississippi River.
