Benton County remembers family of three after fatal crash

BENTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

An entire family lost in just a moment after a fatal car accident in Benton County Saturday night.

Valerie Schneiders, 22, Jason Bessert, 24, and Hailey Bessert, 3, all died at the scene of the accident. A drunken driver ran a stop sign at Highway 30 and 16th Avenue south of Keystone, hitting the car and killing all three.

Schneiders and Jason Bessert were dating at the time and living in Cedar Rapids. They had attended a festival in Schneiders' hometown of Traer Saturday night. They were driving back to Cedar Rapids when the accident occurred.

39-year-old Raul Salazar, Jr. of Bushland, TX was arrested at the scene of the accident. He faces three counts of vehicular homicide, a drunken driving charge and preventing apprehension.

According to The Gazette, Funeral services for Valerie Schneiders are scheduled for Thursday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Overton Funeral Home in Traer. Hailey Bessert's services will be held Friday, August 16 at 11 a.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Services for Jason Bessert will be Saturday, August 17 at 11 a.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.
