CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

World War II veterans from across Iowa were honored in Cedar Rapids during Spirit of '45 Day.

More than 100 people, including many veterans, filled Mercy Medical Center for the day which celebrates the end of WWII.

It's a part of a national movement to honor and thank WWII veterans and instill the hard-working spirit of that generation into today's young people.

"The greatest generation grew up during the Great Depression, they fought a World War, and then after that they re-built the entire world," said Michael Potter, organizer.

Congress proclaimed the second Sunday of August as Spirit of '45 Day in 2010.

This was the first celebration in Eastern Iowa.
