Cedar Rapids History Center revisits country school days

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

People in Cedar Rapids revisited an important part of Iowa's history Saturday.

They gathered at the Carl and Mary Koehler History Center to take part in Country School Day. Past students joined the public to share memories, photos, and artifacts from the area's historic one-room school houses.

Attendees were also treated to a musical play, which depicted songs and anecdotes relating to the joys and challenges of going to a country school. Actors included local kids posing as school children of the past.

Organizer and History Center Director Caitlin Treece noted the importance of today's youth knowing about this time in history. She added that many school groups that visit the museum have no idea that many children were in the same class as their older and/or younger siblings.

Country schools dotted the United States through the first half of the 20th century. Most were consolidated into larger school districts by the 1960s.
