Cedar Valley Derby Divas ticket sales to benefit Angels Park Memorial

Posted: Updated:

The Cedar Valley Derby Divas believe in providing good skating action to fans and in giving back to the community.

"We partner with a different nonprofit organization for every home bout we have, and this home bout we've partnered with angels park memorial island in Evansdale. We'll contribute part of our proceeds to help get that park finished," said Morgan Combs.

Angels Park Memorial in Evansdale is being built in honor of murdered cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

"It was tragic and it hits close to home for a lot of our skaters. Most of our skaters are mothers, family members. We want to do something good for the community," said Rikki Shaver.

The home bout is Saturday, August 10 at 7 p.m. at McElroy Auditorium at the National Cattle Congress Grounds in Waterloo. Tickets are $10 at the door for adults. For every ticket sold, $1 will go to the Angels Park Memorial.

"I'd love to cut a check for $2,000 that's our goal. We already have an area business, The Pour House in Waverly, that's going to match funds up to $300," said Combs.

This year the Cedar Valley Derby Divas have 25 skaters, and just graduated to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. Saturday night, the team takes on the Dakota City Demolition Crew.

Only designated "jammers" can score points. So the objective is to help your jammer get through while blocking the other team's jammer.

Saturday, August 10th is the team's last home bout until November 2nd.

If you're interested in joining the Cedar Valley Derby Divas, there's an informational meeting on Wednesday, August 14th at 7 p.m. at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls.
