Turtle statues vandalized in downtown Dubuque

Posted: Updated:

Two fiberglass turtle statues located in downtown Dubuque have been vandalized. The statues are a part of an exhibit for the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. 18 different statues have been places around Dubuque for the exhibit. American Trust & Savings Bank on Main street in Dubuque says their turtle statue has been vandalized a total of three times so far this summer. They say the last time it was vandalized was just a couple of weeks ago.

Lynne Hager is a Marketing Officer at American Trust & Savings Bank.

"A couple of times I think they tried to take his umbrella," Hager said. "The sign was taken one time, and the last time he was laid down actually on his stomach so their were a lot of scratches on it and we had to repaint. They also took his hat."

Hager says American Trust & Savings Bank decorated the turtle themselves, so it was frustrating to watch it get vandalized.

"We decided to have an employee contest," she said. "We thought it would be great to get the employees involved, so we asked them to come up with any idea they wanted. We did not give them any background on the turtle except that it was a white turtle when we started. It was one of the departments here that actually came up with design and they put it all together."

Hager says the turtle had been kept outside of the bank, but taken inside on weekends.

"We keep him outside," Hager said. "On Saturday and Sunday we were bringing him inside but we left him out for a couple of weekends and that's when this seemed to happen."

She says the bank left the statue outside because many wanted to come take pictures with it. But, Hager says, the turtle statue will now remain inside. American Trust & Savings Bank did not formally public a police report about the vandalism that occurred to their turtle statue. Hager says, they do have surveillance footage of some of the vandals. The other business with a turtle statue that was vandalized in Dubuque, Alliant Energy, did file a criminal mischief report with the Dubuque Police Department.

The Dubuque Police Department says if anyone is a witness to any criminal or suspicious activity call law enforcement immediately to report the activity.
