Hawkeye quarterback competition heats up

With just 3 weeks until game day -- the question of which Hawkeye will start under center remains unanswered

"We've got a 3 horse race," said Ferentz. "And we're going to let them compete."

Last year's back-up -- Jake Rudock sits in a hotly contested 3 way battle with redshirt freshman CJ Beathard and juco transfer Cody Sokol.  None of the three has ever taken a snap in a division 1 college football game.

"It helps having a couple guys that are going through it, seeing things," said Rudock. "You might not get the same reps, but you've got to get the same mental rep, because you never know when you'll get thrown in."

"I'm focusing on myself, not too worried about what they're doing, just focusing on myself," said Beathard "And trying to improve my game more than anything."

"I'm in a great position where I'm able to go out everyday, play football, the thing I love to do, and compete for a job, so I've got no complaints." Said Sokol.

As to when a starter will be named, Coach Ferentz says he would like to get it done in the next week or 2, but there's no guarantees that will happen.

Ferentz:  "I think the biggest thing we've got to do is let the guys compete, in fairness to them and also in fairness to our whole football team, so we make a good decision and if it works out that way, that's great.  In '08 we didn't know until September, so we're going to play it however it appears."

As of yet -- Ferentz says none of the 3 has created any real separation from the pack -- and their Hawkeye teammates say they're good with who-ever gets the starting nod --

CJ: "They're all athletic guys.  I'd be ok with any of the 3 being our starting quarterback."
