Good news for those with a sweet tooth: A small study of older adults suggests chocolate may help keep their brain sharp as they get older.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School had 60 adults who did not suffer from dementia drink two cups of hot chocolate every day for a month. During the time of the study, they did not have any other chocolate.
According to their research, sufficient blood flow to the brain is key to sharp memory and thinking in older age.
They also found participants who had impaired blood flow to the brain saw an increase after they drank the hot chocolate.
Outside experts say the results are preliminary, but there may be a link between the chocolate and the improved blood flow to the brain. Several more studies are needed.
Because of the need for additional studies, researchers say there is no reason to add the extra calories to your diet.
