DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Gov. Terry Branstad named Dr. Brad Buck as the new director of the Iowa Department of Education on Tuesday.

The Governor called Buck a visionary leader who has the right skills to implement landmark education reform that was passed by the 2013 Legislature.

Since July of 2011, Buck has served as superintendent of Saydel School District in rural Polk County.

Previously, he worked as an administrator at Waukee, Hudson and North Mahaska school districts. Before that, Buck was a science teacher at Parkview Middle School in Ankeny.

"Dr. Buck’s passion for giving all students a world-class education and his knowledge of how to better utilize teacher leadership to accomplish that goal played a critical role in his selection," Branstad said in a statement on the Iowa Department of Education website.

Buck's official start date has not yet been set, but will be no later than Sept. 1.
