Posted: Updated:

An Ottumwa woman is dead after the motorcycle she was a passenger on crashed when a tire deflated.

The Iowa State Patrol says a motorcycle driven by 56-year-old Michael Gene Muldoon of Ottumwa was headed east on I-80, near mile marker 207, at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday when the back tire deflated.

Troopers say Muldoon lost control of the motorcycle, throwing him and his passenger, 62-year-old Mary Beth Penne, off the bike.

Muldoon was taken to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics by ambulance to be treated for his injuries. Penne was taken to the same hospital, where she died.

The accident remains under investigation.
