Cedar Rapids 20-year-old indicted on federal child porn charges

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 20-year-old Cedar Rapids man has been indicted on federal child pornography charges.

In the indictment, which was unsealed on July 26, Jason Smith is accused of distributing, receiving and possessing child pornography between 2011 and 2013.

If convicted on all charges, Smith faces up to 50 years in federal prison, a $750,000 fine and could spend the rest of his life on supervised release after being released from prison.

Smith had a detention hearing on July 31 and is being held without bond until his trial which is scheduled for September 23.

This case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
