CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The YWCA's Wize Girls let the sun fuel their fun Thursday thanks to a program at the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education.

More than a dozen girls built and raced solar cars outside the UNI building Thursday.

"Its kind of like we're at art, and we're making stuff at art," 11-year-old Jayda Taylor said.

The activity was free for the girls thanks to Fabulous Resources for Energy Education (FREE).

Energy Education and Outreach Coordinator Pat Higby says that the CEEE will also loan out equipment to teachers.

"It's really hard to teach with empty hands, and it's really hard to learn with empty hands and so our goal is to put things into kids' hands," Higby said.

During the 2012-2013 school year, an estimated 14,877 students will be exposed to this program.
