CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

With only a few finishing touches to go, the American flag painting on the AmVets Post 49 building in Cedar Falls was finished Thursday morning.

Artist Scott LoBaido came from Staten Island to paint the mural. He's been giving his gift of art for more than 20 years.

LoBaido has painted over 1,000 flags across the country with at least one in each state as part of his "Flags Across America" initiative.

The flag on the roof of the AmVets building is 72 feet by 33 feet and serves as a tribute to local veteran Taylor Morris. Morris was injured in Afghanistan in 2011 and is now a quadruple amputee.

LoBaido said while it's a "thank you" to Morris for his service, it's also a "thank you" to the entire community and the state of Iowa for its support.

He said Old Glory will always be his signature work.

"I've seen the Statue of David and the Sistine Chapel and Mona Lisa and everything like that, but the American flag to me is the greatest, most beautiful, most powerful, meaningful work of art," LoBaido said.

Actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band will play in a benefit concert Saturday, Aug. 3, as a fundraiser for Morris.

The concert will be held at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $100 and can be purchased several ways:

  • Online at www.operationtaylor.com
  • Calling toll free at 1-800-293-5949
  • At one of two Hy-Vee stores: College Square Mall in Cedar Falls or on University Avenue in Waterloo

LoBaido will also be at the AmVets building Thursday from noon to 3 p.m., where people can get autographed t-shirts and concert tickets.
