Linn-Mar falls to Johnston at State Baseball Tournament

Posted: Updated:

Joe Hawks threw a complete game shutout and the Johnston Dragons scored on two wild pitches to beat the Linn-Mar Lions 2-0 in Wednesday afternoon's first Class 4A quarterfinal game at Principal Park.

Despite only recording one hit in the game, the seventh-ranked Dragons drew eight walks and got another big performance from their senior pitcher.

Hawks surrendered just three hits in seven scoreless innings for Johnston, while fanning eight. He allowed just one Linn-Mar batter to reach third, in the second, but got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Johnston pushed its first run across in the second without a hit. The Dragons drew three, two-out walks and scored on a wild pitch to go up 1-0. Travis Brenner was the first aboard, stole second, and got to third on a passed ball before scoring the run.

Trevor McCauley led off the sixth inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored the second Johnston run on another wild pitch.

Hawks retired the next six batters over the final two innings to help the Dragons earn a spot in Friday's semifinal game.

Linn-Mar starter Justin Wyant pitched into the fifth inning but was relieved by Austin Stroschein after walking the leadoff man. Wyant (6-3) issued all eight free passes in four innings, including four walks in the second. He didn't allow a hit and struck out five but took the loss for the Lions.

The fourth-seeded Dragons will play the winner of Wednesday's second Class 4A quarterfinal game between third-ranked Des Moines East and Davenport North. The semifinal matchup is set to start at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Fifth-seeded Linn-Mar ends its season at 27-16.
