Fundraiser to be held in memory of Black Hawk Co. deputy

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

A fundraiser has been scheduled in memory of a fallen Black Hawk County deputy.

Deputy Douglas Norton began his career in law enforcement with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office in 1998 when he was 20 years old.

Following a workout in 2011, Norton had a heart attack and died. He was 32.

Family members remember Norton as a devoted husband and father.

They have continued to honor his memory with a scholarship fund through Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

To raise money for the scholarship, they have organized the second annual Deputy Doug Norton Memorial Bags Tournament.

The tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Waverly Fairground's 4-H Building.

The cost to participate is $35 per team (amateur division) and $25 per team for those 16 years old and younger.

Registration before Aug. 13 is encouraged.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to continue a scholarship at Waverly-Shell Rock High School through the Dollars for Scholars program for students planning to pursue a career in the field of law enforcement.

The first $500 scholarship was awarded to Alyson Ponto last May.

More information about the memorial fundraiser can be found here.

Donations toward the scholarship fund can also be made online here.
