Mountain lion on display in Des Moines Police Museum

A mountain lion has found a permanent home in the Des Moines Police Museum.

"Quite unusual to have a mountain lion within the city limits in any city." Said Kari Opperman, of Des Moines.

Last October, Police shot and killed the cougar wandering through a North Des Moines neighborhood. Now, it’s been stuffed and mounted in the museum.

"It's unfortunate that's how it had to happen,” said Sergeant Jason Halifax of the Des Moines Police Department. “We regret it had to happen that way. we don't take any joy in having to kill animals."

Though the department was criticized for killing the animal rather than trapping it, neighbors who saw the animal agree with the call.

"I think for safety reasons, there really was no other choice,” Opperman said. “There's a lot of kids in this neighborhood."

The display was paid for by museum funds and donations from the Des Moines Police Burial Association.
