3A State Baseball: Heelan edges Williamsburg 1-0

Tyler Cropley allowed just two base runners in seven innings and the top-ranked Bishop Heelan Crusaders did just enough offensively to advance, beating the eighth-seeded Williamsburg Raiders 1-0 in Tuesday afternoon's second Class 3A quarterfinal game at Principal Park.

Cropley allowed one hit and fanned nine in his seven-inning shutout, improving to 7-0 on the season. The junior took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but Aaron Schultz lined a leadoff single to center to break up the no-no bid. Cropley was perfect through 4.2 innings but committed an error in the fifth, allowing the Raiders' only other base runner.

The Crusaders scored the lone run of the game with two outs in the second inning off Raiders' starter Chance Wetjen. Tyler Stolen singled and scored when Daulton Sauce smacked an RBI double to deep right-center field, putting Heelan up 1-0.

Wetjen allowed just two more hits the rest of the game and went the distance for Williamsburg. He struck out six, walked four, and got pegged with the loss despite turning in an excellent pitching performance.

Williamsburg catcher Nick Spratt gunned down three Crusaders attempting to steal second during the game. The Raiders turned two double plays and didn't commit an error.

Heelan (35-4) has won 16 straight and will play fifth-seeded Davenport Assumption on Friday at noon in the first Class 3A semifinal game at Principal Park. Williamsburg — which lost eight straight during the middle of the season — finishes its season at 20-19.
