Top seeded Beckman ousts Columbus in 2A State Baseball

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Waterloo Columbus faced a monster challenge  against 11 and 0 Joey Lehmann of Beckman on the mound.
But the Sailors seemed unfazed early as Jeff Horak drove a base hit up the middle plating a pair of runs in the second for a 2, oh lead.

Beckman responded in the bottom half of the inning with a deep drive from Todd Engelken over the left fielder pulling the Blazers within one.
And after tying it on a wild pitch in the 5th -- Beckman would look to take the lead on Engelken's fly to left -- Tony Anstoetter tries to score from third and he's safe at the plate -- 3, 2 Blazers.

That would hold up to the 7th -- Columbus trying to keep it going -- but Isaac Squires lines out to short -- Ian Ross then doubles Horak off of first -- that's the ballgame as Beckman escapes the upset scare 3, 2.

In other 2-A action -- Mount Vernon looked to get past 6th ranked Roland Story,
but the Mustangs fell behind early as Evan Johnson lifted a deep fly in to center -- the sacrifice scores Zach Hovick for a 1, nothing first inning lead.

Mount Vernon got it back in the 4th -- Jake Pisarik with the nice bunt on the squeeze allowing Connor Welch to cross the plate.

This one stayed tied until the 6th -- that's when Roland-Story's Tyler Hovick knocked a base rap to center bringing in Charlie Steenhagen and that was the game winner as Mount Vernon falls 2-1.
