Waverly church turns 100 years old

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

Hundreds of people gathered Sunday at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Waverly for worship and a birthday party.

"It's just been a great place to worship," said Al Janssen, church member.

For seven years Pastor Matthew Versemann has been with the church. He's only the ninth pastor in 100 years to serve at Saint John's Lutheran Church.

"Only the lord knows the future so you never know how long you'll be at a congregation but it's awesome to be able to be here for the celebration of 100 years," said Versemann.

He says the congregation is celebrating this milestone because of the forefathers before them.

"We're kind of standing on the shoulder of all those who've gone before us and they've made sure that we've heard the good news of Jesus," said Versemann.

Saint John's Lutheran Church was established in 1913 in a little white church southwest of the current one. The current building that stands in the middle of Waverly was built in 1957 and is the second location for the congregation.

Since then this group has gone through their ups and downs, including a couple significant floods.

"In 2008, the basement was filled with water and mud, but you know those things just kind of tend to pull the congregation together because we have to work together to clean it up," said Janssen.

But church members say the future looks bright, including building a new addition of offices and rooms for fellowship.

"A lot of things don't last 100 years anymore. We live in a throw away society and the fact that this church has stood here for 100 years and is going strong and we pray and hope it will last another 100 years or 200 years," said Vivian Homeyer.
