Late game errors cost Dons at state baseball

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Five errors in the final 2 innings did Don Bosco in.  The Dons lost a late 3 run lead and would fall 6-5 in 8 innings against Van Buren in the class 1A quarterfinals.

The Dons appeared to take control in the 6th inning.  With the game tied at 2, Jake Hogan drove a base hit up the middle scoring Dylon Rhoads for the 3-2 lead.  Later in the inning, Tanner Smith hit a deep fly to right that was misplayed.  The error allowed 2 more runs to score putting the Dons up 5-2.

That held up until the bottom of the 7th, when things fell apart.  Van Buren scored a pair of runs to pull within one with two outs.  Tyson Sprouse then hit a routine grounder to Rhoads at second, but his throw was off line allowing Sprouse to reach.  First baseman Alex Bagby then tried to pick a runner off third, but his throw got away which allowed the tying run to score to send the game to extra innings.

More errors plagued the Dons in the 7th allowing Van Buren to load the bases.  Travis Havel hit Robert Barker with a pitch which scored the winning run ending the Dons season in heartbreaking fashion.
