Turnovers doom North as South rolls in Shrine Bowl

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Turnovers and sloppy play would be the undoing for the North squad as the South rolled to a 28-0 win in the 41st annual Iowa High School Shrine Bowl.  Overall, the North threw 6 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles as the annual game returned to the UNI-Dome for the first time in 22 years.

The South opened the scoring in the opening quarter as North Scott's Randy Schmidt hit Clint Boffeli of West Des Moines Valley on a 9 yard touchdown strike.  A 32 yard connection from Cedar Rapid's Prairie's Jace Hanna to Atlantic's Sam Markham would give the squad a 14-0 lead at the half.

One of those North turnovers came back to haunt them in a big was after Iowa City West's Ezra Reiners returned a Reggie Schulte interception for a pick six.  The Cedar Rapids Xavier quarterback threw 5 picks in the game.  Hanna rounded out the scoring with his second touchdown pass of the day, a 38 yard strike to Boffeli.
