Volunteers Clean Up Cedar River

A "spring cleaning" was held on the Cedar River today.  The 26th annual Cedar River Cleanup was took place this morning.

Dozens got it started at the Mount Auburn Bridge Park in Brandon.

Volunteers floated down a six mile stretch, picking up anything from pop cans, metal scraps even tires.

Organizers say while the purpose is to clean the river, families get much more out of it than that.

"I think it helps connect people to their community, you know we are a river based community here in Iowa, having folks come out as a family and bringing the kids and bringing the parents out to be out on the water getting the trash out of the river is just a reason to be here but there is more to it than that." Said Rebecca Kauten the President of the Cedar River Festival Group.

Kauten expects that over the past 25 years they have removed over 100 tons of trash from the Cedar River.
