DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
Rising Mississippi levels in the beginning of summer forced a popular Dubuque campground to remain closed due to flooding. The Miller-Riverview Park and Campground opening day this year took place Friday. Campground officials say this years late opening date is the latest opening the campground has had in at least six years. Kenneth Clayton is Manager of the Miller-Riverview Park and Campground.
"We were supposed to open April 15th, but on the 14th of April it flooded, he said. "I guess it's four times the river flooded [the park and campground]."
The river flooded towards the end of May and again near the Fourth of July.
"We were just getting ready to open it up for the Fourth of July weekend and a week before on a Saturday night I got a call from park patrol that the Mississippi River was in the park again, and the river stayed up until two weeks ago." Clayton said.
Miller-Riverview Park and Campground was closed for two busy holidays, which meant lost money for the campground.
"Usually the Fourth of July is our biggest weekend of the year. Normally that weekend we pull in between $7,000 and $8,000. But that's not counting the weekend before or after," he said. "We have lost quite a bit of money so far this year just from being closed Memorial day and the Fourth of July."
Even though the campground is open, only 60 of the 100 electrical sites are available for use. The Miller-Riverview Park and Campground will remain open everyday until October 27th.
