Citation finally issued for trooper driving Gov. Branstad

The Iowa Department of Public Safety has finally issued a speeding citation to a trooper who was clocked at 84 miles per hour while driving the governor in April.

Trooper Steve Lawrence was cited Thursday for going 84 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone in Hamilton County on April 26, according to a DPS report issued Friday.

DPS also noted an investigation into work rule violations resulted in "appropriate discipline" for Lawrence, but did not specify what that discipline would entail.

"The peace officers of the Department of Public Safety must lead by example and obey our traffic laws at all times," said DPS Commissioner Brian London in the release. "We remain committed to serving Iowans professionally and acting in accordance with the law and Departmental policies.”

DPS also said a review of their policies by the State Patrol Command Staff resulted in the following policy being added to its policy on vehicle operations:

“While providing transportation for the Governor, First Lady, First Family,   Lieutenant Governor and other dignitaries, Executive Protection Unit Troopers are subject to rules, requirements and restrictions imposed by law, and applicable Department standards, and will operate state vehicles in accordance with section IV of DPS Operating Manual 22-03.06 (General Guidelines Regarding Operation of State Vehicles).”
