New digital recovery tech helps Waterloo Police

In the last few years, Waterloo Police have added a new crime-fighting technology to their arsenal.

It’s a small computer that allows investigators to pull deleted data from cell phones and computers.

Waterloo Director of Safety Services Dan Trelka said it was necessary to keep up with criminals.

“The way technology is evolving and the way people are become so reliant on it -- we're all carrying smart phones -- it's been incredibly beneficial for us to have the equipment,” he said.

The training and tech were funded in part by a grant from the Black Hawk County Gaming Association.

Trelka also said the State of Iowa initially approached them about the program as an effort to keep Northeast Iowa children safe on the internet, but now, it’s much more.
