A Swisher man was airlifted to the hospital after being rear-ended by a semi as he exited Highway 218 on Wednesday.

Joseph Pallathadathil Mathews, 41, was airlifted to Allen Hospital in Waterloo with unknown injuries, according to the Iowa State Patrol, which issued the report Thursday.

Mathews was wearing a seat belt at the time, reports show.

Mathews was driving southbound on Hwy. 218 when he slowed to enter the ramp leading to Highway 3, according to officials.

As his Mercedes 350 slowed, it was allegedly rear-ended by a southbound Schneider International semi driven by Timothy Scheil, 50, of Sacramento, Calif.

Scheil was not injured in the crash.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Bremer County Sheriff's Office, Waverly Police, Waverly Fire and Waverly EMS.

The incident remains under investigation.
