National Corn Growers president testifies to Congress about ethanol
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -
Pain at the pump is part of the discussion at a hearing in Washington, D.C., this week, where one Floyd County woman testified about a law impacting ethanol in Iowa.
President of the National Corn Growers Association Pam Johnson testified at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee Wednesday.
The hearing was critiquing the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), a provision of the Clean Air Act. The provision sets targets and timetables for biofuels like ethanol.
Johnson says the RFS has created jobs and decreased the nation's independence on foreign oil.
"It is also spurring innovation and helping drive the development of advanced and cellulosic biofuel facilities," Johnson said. "In short, it is doing exactly what it was designed to do -- spur the development of a significant alternative to petroleum that ignites economic development for those who produce these new fuels and for those who use it."
Johnson says the RFS has lowered the price consumers pay at the pump by at least 89 cents per gallon.
