Women with kidney stones may have additional health issues

Posted: Updated:

Women with a history of kidney stones may have an increased risk for heart problems, according to an Italian study.

Researchers looked at health data collected from more than 250,000 men and women who were followed for several years.

They found women who had developed kidney stones also had an increased risk for heart disease and heart attacks. This association was not found in men.

Outside experts say they are unsure why this risk exists for women and not men, and say additional studies are required.
