60th Annual Dubuque County Fair kicked off Tuesday

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

With beautiful weather in this week's forecast, organizers of the 60th annual Dubuque County Fair are crossing their fingers for record attendance.

The fair's first day Tuesday kicked off with 4-H and FFA livestock judging.

This marks 11-year-old Emily Bonert's second year of showing.

"I like it because there's a lot of good friends, and I just like to hang out with them and just have a good time and show my cattle and see what it's worth and everything," she said.

Jamie Blum said the Fair's fair weather is only fair, after what they endured last year.

"Oh my goodness, last year when we were standing out here, it was so hot. I don't remember what the heat index was, but it was over 100," she said. "With the temperatures forecasted for this week, we couldn't ask for any more."

This year, for the first time, Full Circle Organics Cooperative is partnering with the Dubuque County Fair. All the food vendors have special blue bins for recycling compostable materials, such as paper and food scraps.

On Tuesday, Full Circle Organics' Kate Goodman was distributing bins to the various vendors.

"We're hoping to see about three to four tons diverted from the landfill this year," Goodman said. "It kind of depends on how intentional everybody wants to be, because it's not very hard to separate any food scraps and paper products."

Also new this year is an event Saturday morning called the Barnyard Charge. It has two races of different intensity levels, but both include obstacles and a lot of mud.

There's also a canned food drive Sunday for the Dubuque Area Labor Harvest.
