New artwork in Cedar Rapids aims to beautify streets

There's some new artwork going up in Cedar Rapids and it's not somewhere you might think to look. The public art piece is being painted on the street at the intersection of 2nd Ave. and 3rd St. SE. It's the beginning of a new initiative to beautify several intersections downtown.

Painters did the work Saturday so that guests at the Downtown Farmers' Market could watch the process.

The design is in the shape of a drop of water.

"We think that's so appropriate of our history five years ago and the flood and obviously being so close to the river, that we think that's a very good way to start with a water drop with the interest and beauty that it can bring," said Marilee Fowler, Cedar Rapids Area & Convention Bureau.

This specific intersection was chosen because in can be seen from some of the city's skywalks and the new U.S. Cellular Center. More intersections are expected to be painted throughout the summer.
