Expectations high for Hawkeye wrestling program

Iowa's last wrestling team title was in 2010. Iowa's last wrestling team title was in 2010.

For the wrestling team at the University of Iowa, the goal isn't a national championship.  It's the expectation.

During his time as the Hawkeyes head coach, Dan Gable led the program to 16 national titles, his last coming in 1997.

Iowa has 23 wrestling national championships to its name, but hasn't won a team title since 2010.

The past three seasons the Hawkeyes have finished fourth or better in the NCAA Tournament team standings.

Gable, who was in Sioux City on Thursday, says the program is continually working to meet the expectations it's become known for.

"They got fourth last year at the NCAAs, but fourth brought home a trophy," Gable said.  "It was the highest place finish of any team at the University of Iowa.  Wrestling is still doing it's part but, we're a little spoiled and would like to take that fourth back up to first."

The Hawkeyes finished 20-3 last season and went a perfect 8-0 in Big Ten meets.

Derek St. John won Iowa's lone individual title at 157 pounds at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines.
