Events will make for a busy Cedar Valley weekend

BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

Judging by the gridlocked traffic on Interstate 380 heading into Waterloo Friday afternoon, it’s going to be a busy weekend in the Cedar Valley.

Aaron Buzza is the Executive Director of Travel Waterloo. He said, there’s going on.

"It really is going to bring a lot of folks to the Cedar Valley from outside the area,” he said. “But it's also going to be an opportunity for people within the Cedar Valley to experience some really fun events as well."

Several high-profile events are scheduled, including the cooking competition BBQ ‘Loo and the Waterloo Open golf tournament. There is also Promise Keepers, a religious group that seeks to make men better husbands, fathers and sons. Their event in Cedar Falls brought around 5000 men to the McLeod Center – for the second time.

"It was one of our most successful events last year, as for attendance and participation and excitement afterwards,” said David Jesse, the Director of Field Operations for the group. “They wouldn’t let us leave last year until we promised to come back."

Buzza said that based on projections, events this weekend could bring as much as $3 million dollars into the area. He said that money will make a big impact.

"In the service industry especially, we're seeing that money change hands and keep people employed,” Buzza said.

And there’s more to it than that, even.

"We talk about the dollars and cents and that important, because we are an economic development generator,” said Kim Manning, Manager of the Cedar Falls Tourism and Visitor Center. “But, it's also quality of life."

And both tourism organizers have a final message to visitors that like what they see --

"Come back!” Buzza said. “We hope many times as visitors, but also as residents as well."

“And wait till next weekend,” Manning said. “It's even busier next week."
