South Sioux hosts state softball tourney

South Sioux City is hosting the 12 and under state softball tournament this weekend. South Sioux City is hosting the 12 and under state softball tournament this weekend.

It's been two years since the Missouri River flood devastated parts of Siouxland. The recovery has been marked by different milestones for different people.

One milestone for sports fans in South Sioux City has been the return of play at the Riverview Ballfields. For the second straight year, South Sioux is hosting a state tournament at Riverview.

This year it's the girls 12 and under state softball tourney which started Friday afternoon. Twenty-six Nebraska teams will compete, with the state champ being crowned on Sunday.

It cost over $200,000 to get the fields back into playing shape but they're now better than ever.

"It means a lot to us. It's a huge thing for these fields to come back for everybody, for all the hard work everybody's done, it's really paying off right now," South Sioux City Parks Director Gene Maffit said. "This is really a testament to all the hard work they put in."

"It's fun," Tony Christensen, SSC 12U Head Coach added. "Everything is coming together. The grass is another year older, the trees are a little bit better, and they're actually all starting to grow now."

There are 20 new camp sites, a bike trail and soccer fields crews are continuing to work on. Maffit expects everything to be ready by the fall.
