2 injured after vehicle rear-ends farm tractor

Two people were injured and one will face drug charges after their vehicle rear-ended a piece of farm equipment being pulled by a farm tractor in Black Hawk County.

Darren Peyton, 30, of Waterloo, was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with a broken neck after the incident, according to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.

Peyton was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Kelsie Heffron, 25, of Waterloo, when Heffron allegedly rear-ended a tractor driven by Lonnie Newhall, 42, of Independence.

The farm tractor was pulling a turbo disc tilling tool eastbound on East Cedar Wapsi Road.

Heffron had multiple minor injuries, according to deputies. She was charged with failure to stop in the assured clear distance ahead.

Peyton will face drug charges after the crash upon his release from the hospital, officials said.

A 1-year-old in a car seat in the vehicle was uninjured. Newhall was also not injured in the crash.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Dunkerton Fire and Ambulance, Denver Ambulance, Readlyn First Responders and the Iowa State Patrol.
