A benefit has been planned for 2-year old Izebella Denny, who was paralyzed after being hit by an alleged drunk driver in May.

Izebella's mother -- Rachel Morton Denny, 26, of Cedar Rapids -- was killed in the crash.

According to Diane DeGroote, a friend of Denny's who is helping organize the benefit, Izebella has exceeded doctor's expectations.

"At this time, it is still looking like Bella will be paralyzed from the neck down and have limited speech capabilities," said DeGroote.

DeGroote said Izebella has been in the University of Iowa Children's Hospital since May.

"She had gone minutes without oxygen to her brain and suffered extensive damage to her spine," said DeGroote. "Bella is fighting and amazes her doctors with her response. She remains alert and aware of her surroundings."

DeGroote helped establish the Rachel and Bella Fund in memory of her friend and to offset the cost of Izebella's medical expenses as well as offer support for Denny's 4-year old son.

A benefit is planned for Saturday, Aug. 3 above Chrome Horse in downtown Cedar Rapids.

The concert will feature local bands and a silent auction. Admission is $5.

The Rachel and Bella Fund is also planning a "Walk for Bella" in August.
