Dubuque opens cooling centers Thursday and Friday

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Due to the extreme temperatures Thursday and Friday, the City of Dubuque has opened three cooling centers for July 18-19 in Dubuque.

The cooling centers are located at:

Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W 11th Street; Thursday 1-9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m..

Mystique Community Ice Center, 1800 Admiral Sheehy Drive; Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Multi-Cultural Family Center, 1157 Central Avenue; Thursday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

City officials are also advising citizens to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses. City officials are advising the following tips for the public during this warm weather.

- Use the buddy system: Check on your neighbors, friends and relatives. Watch others for heat-induced illness.

- Increase fluid intake, regardless of activity level.

- Choose lightweight, light- colored and loose-fitting clothing, and wear sunscreen.

- Wear hats to shade your face.

- Keep in the shade or in air conditioning as much as possible.
