Highway 63 project will be done sooner than expected

The Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the Highway 63 project should be done five weeks early.

The entire project is about 5.6 miles long and spans a length beginning south of Waterloo through Hudson.

The DOT said they split the work into two parts.

Right now, the contractor has been working on the north section -- Schrock Road to U.S. Hwy. 20.

Just recently, contractors have been seeing an opportunity to open a detour, allowing them to work on both sections at one time.

"We are not going to put in a detour starting Monday that will take Schrock Road to ... D-46 over to 21 and then up to 20 and then back to 63," said Pete Hjelmstad, Field Services Coordinator.

Instead of the project being done by mid-October, the road should now be done early September, officials say.

"We're thrilled that it's going to get done and gotten through it quick," said Bill Colwell, Bill Colwell Ford.

Colwell is pleased the project will be done sooner. He says business at Bill Colwell Ford has been surprisingly good throughout the project.

"Probably didn't have the impact we thought. We tried very hard to communicate with our customers and the DOT has done a good job communicating I think that's really panned out trying to get the word out it's only five more minutes on the detour to Hudson," said Colwell.
