Iowa City School Board continues discussing the possibility of closing schools

The Iowa City School Board held a work session Tuesday evening to discuss the possibility of closing schools.

For months a committee worked to develop a 10-year facilities master plan. On July 9, 2013, the committee presented the boards with two recommendations.

District employees say the board is leaning towards a proposal that would only close Hoover Elementary School and leave all others open. When this proposal was presented to the board, the recommendation included closing the Theodore Roosevelt Education Center (TREC) building. However, the board does not seem to want to pursue that recommendation.

Board members want to know if Hoover must close to allow for expansion at City High or if they can keep the elementary school open and still expand the high school.

The other proposal that was recommended to the board closed Hoover Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Hills Elementary. District employees say the board does not seem to want to choose this proposal.

The discussion will continue July 23, 2013, at the board's regularly scheduled meeting.
