Pair to revive Johnson's Bakery in new facility

Posted: Updated:

Johnson's Bakery may yet live on in the Cedar Valley, but under a different name and ownership.

After 63 years in business, Johnson's Bakery of Waterloo closed its doors Sunday. Now, Carl Blake of Rustik Rooster Farms in Ionia said they're in talks to purchase much of the Johnson's equipment and continue producing some of their baked goods under a new name.

"It's extremely important for us to continue that here because we have so many people that are used to getting up in the morning and getting their doughnuts or getting their cream horn or the bread that they have," Blake said. "There's so much heritage that we have right there from Waterloo, and the employees -- I mean, most of them have grown up there."

Rustik is partnered with Marty Collins, who previously worked as a baker for Johnson's. The two plan to bring some of the employees from Johnson's on board for this new endeavor.

"We're going to have over 100 years of baking experience, just in the employees that we bring with us," Blake said.

Rustik also said they plan to acquire Waverly's Home Bakery.

"What we're going to do is take those two bakeries and combine them into one and build a new facility," Blake said.

Currently, the plan is to build and operate this new facility in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. They also plan to continue supplying some of Johnson's former corporate customers.
