Celebration marks 23rd anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act

Eastern Iowans marked the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act Saturday afternoon. Veterans Memorial Stadium hosted a picnic before the Kernels game.

The Americans With Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The law expanded opportunities for people with disabilities and helped protect them against discrimination.

"It's important to recognize that this landmark legislation had a great impact on people with disabilities," said Ann Hearn, Linn County Community Services. "It helped them ensure that they would be included in our community like everyone else."

As a part of the celebration there was a resource fair for people with disabilities.

Iowa senator Tom Harkin authored and sponsored the bill when it passed 23 years ago.
