Ding Darling Day brings fun and education to Port of Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque celebrated conservation Saturday at the 10th annual Ding Darling day. The day is named after cartoonist and conservation activities Jay Norwood Darling.

Mark Wagner is an Education Director at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

"He was actually a cartoonist who drew for the Des Moines Register. He did a lot of political cartoons and he was very famous in getting the refuge system going. He also made the first duck stamp." Wagner said.

Saturday's event celebrated Darling by teaching others more about protecting the environment and different conservation practices. During the event, people could see and hold animals like turtles, make crafts and take part in several other activities geared around conservation.

"Hopefully they are able to take away the message of how to protect and care for some of the animals and some of the wildlife, as far as pollution and things along the Mississippi river." Wagner said.

This is the 10th year the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium has hosted Ding Darling Day.
