KEY WEST (KWWL) -

44 eastern Iowa Boy Scouts bid farewell to their friends and family Thursday as they headed out to the National Jamboree in West Virginia.

This is the largest group of Boy Scouts the Northeast Iowa Council has ever sent to the event, which takes places just once every four years.

Each scout had to raise nearly $2,000 to go on this 15-day trip. Nick Psihoyos was one of them.

"It's going to be 40,000 scouts and whitewater rafting, ziplining, a bunch of other cool stuff," he said shortly before boarding the bus. "There's awesome concerts and great stuff like that, so I'm really looking forward to it."

This will be the first time hundreds of girls will be attending the Boy Scouts of America's National Jamboree. They're part of the organization's youth development program called Venturing.
