Johnson County adds drop box for old license plates

Posted: Updated:

Johnson County officials are trying to make getting rid of old license plates a little bit easier.

Workers have installed a 24-hour secure license plate drop-off box at the county's administration building.

The box is checked daily by the county treasurer, and all plates will be unregistered from the system, cut up, and then recycled.

The state will be replacing all license plates in Iowa over the next ten years.

Officials say the drop box will help handle the increased load.

"They don't end up in the landfill.  They don't' wind up on somebody else's car or improper use of the plates, and it becomes a win-win for everybody," said Johnson County Treasurer Tom Kriz.

More than 15 thousand license plates were turned in to be recycled at the Johnson County Treasurer's Office last year.
