Camping reopens at Yellow River State Forest

Posted: Updated:

Camping has now been reopened at Yellow River State Forest in northeast Iowa, but on a limited basis. Yellow River State Forest campgrounds were closed back in June after wet weather caused flooding and forced an evacuation of the campgrounds.

Cleanup has been underway at the Yellow River States Forest campgrounds. This week, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says camping has resumed at Big Paint Creek following a major cleanup to remove debris.

Rylan Retallick is a Park Ranger at Yellow River State Forest.

"We had to fill in some undermining of the road," he said. "Their was a lot of black dirt that had been washed out, undermined, throughout the lawn I guess you could say. We also had to retrieve a lot of picnic tables out of the woods."

While Big Paint Creek is now open for campers, cleanup is still underway at Little Paint Creek as well as Yellow River State Forests equestrian campgrounds.

"We are done with the heavy equipment at Little Paint. Now it is more of the minor details, the finishing touches I guess you would say. We are currently down at the other campground at the Creek Side Equestrian Campground with the heavy equipment." Retallick said.

Retallick hopes Little Paint Creek will be open by August.
