Iowa sweet corn delayed this year but you won't have to wait much longer

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) -

If you've been looking for Iowa sweet corn recently you probably haven't been able to find any. The crop is running behind schedule this year because of the wet spring we had, but you won't have to wait much longer.

Douglas Ralston loves fresh, Iowa-grown fruits and vegetables.

"There isn't a produce I don't like," said Ralston, who lives in Springville.

He's ready for some locally grown sweet corn which would normally be available by now. This year it's not.

Sweet corn producers say the crop is running late this year due to the wet spring we had. That delayed them from getting into the fields and planting.

This comes after last year's drought. A dry spring allowed planting to begin early but continued heat killed about 30% of Knight's Sweet Corn's crop.

"It's been a challenge to say the least," said Gary Knight. "I don't think next year it could surprise us any way with what we had last year with the drought and this year now."

The good news is Iowa sweet corn should be ready within a week at farmers' markets and those roadside stands.

"I think it'll be good," said Knight. "We've had plenty of moisture. Corn likes moisture and the crop really looks pretty well."

People like Ralston can't wait.

"Two ears a day, at least, when it starts," said Ralston.
