American Red Cross offers tips to beat the summer heat

With high summer temperatures, the American Red Cross is reminding people to take care of themselves in the heat.

Their tips include:

  • Never leave children or pets inside cars on hot days
  • Drink fluids but avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Wear loose clothing that is lightweight and light-colored
  • Avoid doing strenuous activity outside
  • Use a buddy system outdoors and take frequent breaks
  • Check on family and friends who do not have air conditioning
  • Make sure animals are not suffering from heat and have plenty of water
  • If you don't have air conditioning, consider going to a public place with air conditioning during the warmest parts of the day.

If someone is suffering from the heat, it may be from heat exhaustion. The Red Cross says you should get them to a cool place, have them rest, and drink water.

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke which can be deadly. Symptoms include hot, dry skin, changes in consciousness, and vomiting. If you notice someone suffering from these symptoms the Red Cross says you should call 911.
