Eight Iowa kennels among HSUS's 'A Horrible Hundred'

A report came out from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) listing 100 dog kennels that are of high concern to the humane society. Eight kennels are listed in Iowa.

Doug and Wendie Dettbarn own Purple Heart Kennel near Strawberry Point and are named in the report, 'A Horrible Hundred.'

A KWWL reporter spoke to Doug on the phone Tuesday morning and he declined to speak to on camera.

A KWWL crew, then went to the kennel and asked them about the list.

"I am here to help clear your name," said Nikki Newbrough, KWWL reporter.

"My name is cleared," said a woman at Purple Heart Kennel.

When our crew arrived, a woman shut the gate to the property, said 2 words, and decided she didn't want to answer any of our questions.

According to the HSUS in 2012 the USDA cited the kennel for keeping dogs in outside kennels that did not provide proper protection from the wind and rain.

In 2011, inspectors cited Purple Heart Kennel for improper vet care, saying one of the dogs had a mass on him the size of a baseball. Also a pug had "green crusty material around both eyes"

The Clayton County Sheriff said they haven't had any run ins with the kennel.
